The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model.

Both organizations are wholly supported by auto insurers and insurance associations.

Compensation consists of a competitive salary and a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contributions. Other benefits include health insurance (with dental and vision coverage), life insurance, medical and dependent care flex spending accounts and three weeks of paid vacation in your first year.

Research Analyst

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) seeks a Research Analyst at our offices in Arlington, VA.

The Research Analyst will lead research projects that rely on statistical techniques to analyze large amounts of insurance data.

Primary Duties

  • Identify highway safety and/or insurance issues to research
  • Formulate study designs and produce project plans with minimal supervision from senior researcher/supervisor
  • Independently analyze insurance records of over 500 million vehicles to quantify the benefits of lifesaving and cost-reducing technologies and to explain how insurance costs vary
  • Independently write reports for publication
  • Serve as a primary resource on alternative analytical procedures
  • Present findings to technical and nontechnical audiences, including high-level executives in structured settings
  • Represent HLDI and IIHS to insurance companies and at meetings of roadway safety professionals
  • Respond to technical inquiries
  • Manage and/or assess data for quality and fitness of purpose
  • May mentor less experienced research analysts
  • Provide technical consultation to other department staff
  • Monitor and keep IIHS-HLDI aware of developments in areas of expertise
  • Conduct analyses in support of organizational decision making
  • Produce slides and visualizations
  • Proofread presentations and reports

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or master’s degree in math, statistics, machine learning or related field plus at least three years of experience in database and record sets or bachelor’s degree with five years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency with statistical modeling tools and one or more programming languages; SAS and SQL skills preferred
  • Understanding of data storage, retrieval and analysis
  • Advanced analytical skills and demonstrated knowledge of statistical distributions and modeling techniques
  • Experience with databases and record sets with millions of records
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Self-starter who is highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An interest in highway safety and automobiles

Vehicle Information Analyst

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) seeks a Vehicle Information Analyst at our offices in Arlington, VA.

The Vehicle Information Analyst will work with our vehicle information team to collect and deliver vehicle information and VIN decoding services.

Primary Duties

  • Collect features, specifications and VIN data related to automobiles, motorcycles and other insurable vehicles
  • Utilize HLDI mission-critical processes and or applications to collect, track, log, process and quality-check vehicle information
  • Create content for IIHS-HLDI websites, webinars and presentations
  • Utilize SQL, Python and other tools to review, troubleshoot and analyze data issues and report findings
  • Works with programmers to design and implement quality-control processes and tools
  • Utilize HLDI applications to create, quality-check and deliver custom datasets in support of IIHS-HLDI projects and for member companies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s plus five years of relevant experience in data analysis, data acquisition, and data entry, or master’s degree plus three years of relevant experience or a PhD.

Programmer Analyst

The Programmer/Analyst will work with our vehicle information team to support the collection and delivery of vehicle information and VIN-decoding services.

Primary Duties

  • Design, write and maintain web pages and web applications that deliver data to key constituencies
  • Design, write and maintain programs and web applications in support of data collection, data analysis and quality control
  • Design, write, and maintain HLDI mission-critical data-processing applications
  • Designs, writes and maintains programs to extract and analyze datasets in support of IIHS-HLDI and member company research

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s plus five years of relevant experience in software and web programming, data analysis, data mining and developing data-processing tools, or master’s degree plus three years of relevant experience or a PhD.
